Priscila Riroroco: “Easter Island, My Home”

Easter Island, also known as Rapa Nui or the navel of the world, is a small island located in the Pacific Ocean. It is considered one of the most isolated places in the world, located 3,800 km from the South American continent. Rapa Nui was annexed to Chile in 1888.

Since I was a little girl, I always heard my grandfather speak about the island and his family. I tried to imagine it and thought that, one day, I would like to visit it. In 1997, we traveled from our hometown in Sweden to Chile and, when I was 21 years old, my grandfather brought me to live with him on the island. As I grew up in Rapa Nui, I thought it would be difficult to adapt to this new place. I really didn’t know what to expect, but my Rapa Nui family was so affectionate and everyone welcomed me so lovingly. I also made  several friends, who, to this day, remain my best friends.

I am currently married and have two children. We have traveled to many places all over the world; however, I feel that Rapa Nui is the place where I belong. It is my home.

When I go to the countryside, I can see nature and its different colors, and if you are sensitive like me, you can appreciate that every day is different, even if you are in the same place. For example, when I feel sad sometimes, all I want is to be alone. I need to just go to the sea and look at it. I don’t know why, but I do. Maybe it’s my indigenous roots or a message from my ancestors, who send me to the sea to calm myself down.

I thank my grandfather for bringing me to Rapa Nui, and leaving me here with him…
